Life's Rich: Dream Girls USA Pageant

Young girls wearing long, formal dresses with satin sashes, their crowns speckled in rhinestones, scurry to the bathroom to check themselves in the mirror one last time. They hover between panic and exhilaration in their Cinderella-wear. Mothers, too, are frenzied and, of course, doting. Soon, they'll be watching their little princesses perform. The three-day journey to become Dream Girls USA royalty is about to begin. Cameras are not typically allowed into the pageants, but photographer Jennifer Silverberg documented the event with permission of the organizers. Here is her photo story.

When a queen has held her rank for a year, she walks the stage to bid farewell to all as her reign comes to an end. Many of her pageant friends and family will then join the queen on stage in a ritualistic line to hug and present her with gifts as a sort of congratulatory good-bye.
