Lyle Lovett

7 p.m. Friday, July 28. Overlook Stage (Sullivan Boulevard, on the Arch Grounds).

Say a little prayer for Lyle Lovett — and more specifically, pray for the return of his muse, which has been on vacation for some time. In the ten years since his landmark album, Road to Ensenada, Lovett has released one album of original material (2003's My Baby Don't Tolerate) along with a live album, a two-disc covers set and a greatest-hits collection. Even if he never writes another song, he's contributed plenty to the American songbook. For a singer who rarely changes tone and a songwriter who rarely punches, Lovett's covered a lot of ground over time: the gentle venom of "God Will," the provincial pride of "That's Right (You're Not from Texas)" and the desolation of "North Dakota."
