Making Beautiful Music Together

If you're a neurotic composer with a keen wit, don't you want your love interest to be wacky -- and as spontaneous and free-wheeling as you precisely aren't? Sure you do, especially if you're a character in a Neil Simon comedy with the music written by Marvin Hamlisch. They're Playing Our Song is the Simon play under discussion, replete with that Hamlisch score. The 1979 Tony nominee for Best Musical recounts the unlikely love connection between Vernon, the straitlaced-but-funny composer, and Sonia, a loopy and easygoing lyricist. Our Song was inspired by the real-life romance of Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager, lending the plot contrivances some handy verisimilitude.
