Manly Movies

The concept of manliness seems to be, like an epic 60-yard Hail Mary pass into the end zone, perpetually up for grabs. Maleness is as much a cultural construction as it is a biological given. At any rate, regular, unmacho guys do the best they can maneuvering among often mystifying — but never overtly stated — rules and codes and rituals. Now if you think our current notions of masculinity can be tricky, have a peek at the ideas of the past. Tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the AT&T Foundation Multipurpose Room of the Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue; 314-746-4599 or www.mohistory.org) you can do that with How to Be a Man, a selection of vintage education films formerly shown to unformed boys in U.S. classrooms. The films were designed to help usher lads into sturdy manhood, but you should take this opportunity to ask a bud out on a nice man date. And don't be too much of a sissy to say, "I love you, man." The program is free.
