In the '90s, Mike Doughty led the New York City quartet Soul Coughing with streetwise slang, mutated metaphors and a cocksure voice that made lyrics such as "You get the ankles, and I'll get the wrists" seem perfectly normal for a pop song. As a solo artist, Doughty has toned down the beautiful weirdness of his old band in favor of acoustic-guitar-led rock & roll. The just-released Sad Man Happy Man continues this streak with the positively jaunty, parentheses-happy single "(You Should Be) Doubly (Gratified)." His vitriol and skewed sense of humor has hardly dulled, though, as the instructional "How to Fuck a Republican" can attest. This evening's show will be an acoustic set, and Doughty will share the stage with cellist Andrew "Scrap" Livingston.
