Mommie Dearest?

She’s a tough customer

Lifetime movies — with their over-dramatic storylines, suspense-building plots and tidy two-hour runtimes — make for some pretty entertaining TV. Sure, you might not buy into all the hype and silliness, but you have to admit that you love to peer in on families that are crazier and more criminal than yours. The comedy Die! Mommie! Die! features all the stuff you want, but it takes the deliciously melodramatic genre back to its 1960s Joan Crawford-esque roots. In this play, there are drugs, there's resentment, there's faded stardom, and there's a murder plot — and it's all onstage and performed live! Stray Dog Theatre presents Charles Busch's Die! Mommie! Die! at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (December 4 through 20), with an additional 2 p.m. show on the final Saturday, at the Tower Grove Abbey (2336 Tennessee Avenue). Tickets cost $18 to $20 and are available at 314-865-1995 or through www.straydogtheatre.org.
Thursdays-Saturdays. Starts: Dec. 4. Continues through Dec. 20, 2008
