More Yarn, Not Yawns

Oh, the plight of the knitter! Until recently, she wasn't viewed as cool and crafty, but instead as frumpy, uptight and 100 percent grandmotherly. Why, just a few years ago, stereotypes would've had you believing that knitters were less dynamic than your average scrapbooker — and generalizations like these, even in the crafting world, hurt. But despite all of this past silliness, knitters today don't cower in the corners with their needles — they get out of the house, and they knit! They knit for pleasure, and with events like Needles for Newborns, they knit for good causes. This 24-hour crochet and knit extravaganza not only has knitters signing up for two-hour sessions to create mittens, hats and blankets that will be donated to newborns at St. Louis Children's Hospital, but the organizers of the event are also asking crafters to work through the night (thus the 24-hourness of it all)! And everyone knows that only cool people stay up late! The knit-a-thon is held at Paste, an arts and crafts store in Soulard (1009 Russell Boulevard; 314-577-6930 or www.pastecrafts.com), and it starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, October 24, and doesn't conclude until 8 a.m. Sunday, October 25. Various eateries, including Soulard Coffee Garden, will donate food for the participants, and knitters, you will provide the fun.
