No Life Till Leather

Leather is a transformative material. Switch from a corduroy blazer to your windbreaker, and the only evident change is that you don't make that sound when you swing your arms. But throw a leather jacket on — or better yet, strip down to your bare chest and put on your leather vest — and suddenly you're no longer that guy selling supplemental insurance — you're a mysterious badass who's just blown into town looking for a good time. Those tanned hides change a man; but while anyone can buy leather, not everyone can wear it. Tonight, the city's most avid leathermen will demonstrate exactly how a confident, strong and sexy man wears the hell out their second skins at the Mr. Missouri Leather 2011 competition, presented by Gateway MC. Beginning at 10 p.m. at JJ's Clubhouse (3858 Market Street; www.gatewaymc.org), contestants will compete in the traditional categories of cruise wear and formal wear while being judged on their physique and personality. The more informal Gateway Guy competition offers those who are new to the leather scene a chance to dip their toes in the competitive waters to determine if they have what it takes. Admission to Mr. Missouri Leather is $10.
