Old Fashioned Fun

You say you want to return to Christmas the way it was back in the good old days? Is 1947 old enough for you? That's when the holiday charmer The Bishop's Wife was released. Cary Grant stars as an angel named Dudley who comes to earth to answer a troubled bishop's (David Niven) prayer for guidance. The serenely beautiful Loretta Young plays the title role, with whom the angel falls in love (but who wouldn't?). The film is an intriguing blend of drama, comedy and fantasy, complete with one of the most lyric ice skating sequences ever filmed. It's all been captured in beautiful black and white by legendary cinematographer Gregg Toland (Citizen Kane). And where better to enjoy this exemplar of Christmas Past than at the venerable Hi-Pointe Theatre (1005 McCausland Avenue; 314-644-1100 or www.hi-pointtheatre.com), where the Bishop's Wife may well have screened 66 years ago. There's one showing only, today at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are a turn-back-the-clock $5.
