Open Your Eyes and Dream

Based on title alone, you might not think there’s much action in The Sleeping Beauty, what with all the resting and everything. Fortunately, St. Louis’ own Alexandra Ballet Company knows how to pack this fairytale with lots of grace and touches of magic, making the story leap to new heights. For the unfamiliar, here’s how the tale goes: In the haste of just having a baby, the king and queen mistakenly exclude one of the kingdom’s fairies from a party honoring their dear newborn, Princess Aurora. To exact her revenge, this spiteful sprite casts a spell on the little one in an attempt to guarantee her death after a needle prick on her sixteenth birthday. Luckily, a nice fairy was overseeing the proceedings and was able to do a spell switcheroo to ensure the injured teen would only sleep until her true love delivered a smooch, at which time she would awaken to live happily ever after. Lovely, right? Made only more so through Alexandra’s elegant choreography, Tchaikovsky’s score, delicate costuming and hand-painted sets, all showcased on the stage of the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (One University Drive; 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org). The Sleeping Beauty comes alive at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday (February 25 and 26); tickets cost $10 to $30.
