Primordial Undermind

9 p.m. Friday, March 2. Off Broadway (3509 Lemp Avenue).

Initially based in Austin, Texas, but recently relocated to Vienna, Austria, Primordial Undermind knows a few things about incorporating the sounds of different cultures into amorphous instrumental music. A cursory tour of the band's songs reveals immense breadth and depth: At times Eastern, almost sitar-like guitar tones modulate over a cymbal's dull roar, only to be supplanted by a wildly flanging guitar solo. This is psychedelia with the patience of sludge-rock and the skronky soul of free jazz. Last year's Loss of Affect was a hit with the readerships of both The Wire and Arthur, proving Primordial Undermind's dirges and freak-outs embrace the inventiveness of experimentation and the rooted, bucolic simplicity of acoustic guitar.
