Scotch Eggs Kilt Him

It is Mr. Night's dream to re-create the infamous egg-eating contest in Cool Hand Luke — but to do it with Scotch eggs. Hard-boiled eggs are by themselves a tasty, any-time-of-the-day snack, but a hard-boiled egg coated in sausage and breading and then deep-fried — well, that's brilliant. In fact, Mr. Night could eat a tidy half-dozen right now, if only he had a pint or two with which to wash them down. But he must refrain, for the moment. Mr. Night is saving his gustatory prowess for Schlafly's annual Burns Night. A traditional Scots evening in celebration of the poet Robert Burns, Burns Nights are held across Scotland every year on the bard's birthday. Schlafly's party features speechifying, the music of Duddybreeks and the Invera'an Pipe Band, Scottish food specials and the tapping of the first kegs of Scotch Ale of the season, all between 5 p.m. and 1 a.m. at the Schlafly Tap Room (2100 Locust Street; 314-241-2337 or www.schlafly.com). Admission is free, and you'd be advised to keep a wide berth around Mr. Night. You know, just in case his Scotch-egg plan goes a little gang agley.
