Signed, Sealed, Delivered

Nothing pairs better with the colder seasons than a dark, introspective film. Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal is set during the Black Death era and begins with knight Antonius Block (Max von Sydow) confronting the personification of Death. A cat-and-mouse game of chess commences, as the knight staves off Death to delay the end of his life. The duration of the game pushes Block into questioning his faith in God and the concept of an intervening divine being. Block's internal conflict is reinforced when he befriends a beautiful family but simultaneously is made aware that thousands are dying of the bubonic plague. Bergman elegantly weaves together several plot lines to illustrate his ideas on the presence, and silence, of God. The Faith in Film series at Lindenwood University's Young Hall (209 South Kingshighway St., St. Charles) screens The Seventh Seal at 3 p.m. Admission is $5 (cash only) and free for Lindenwood students.
