Sing While the World Burns

The world is a topsy-turvy mess in Kander and Ebb's Cabaret. Much of the blame rests with the ascendant Nazi party, an unseen menace that becomes more threatening to life and liberty every day. The performers at the Kit Kat Klub reflect the world's madness, hurling invective at authority through satirical songs and partying with abandon. Into this maelstrom sails Cliff, an honest young American who appears to be way in over his head -- particularly when he meets Sally Bowles, the queen of the Kit Kat. Can these two find love and solace in a world like this? Stray Dog Theatre throws you into the decadence of old Berlin with its new production of Cabaret, complete with actual cabaret-style seating, drink service during the show and a female Emcee (the terrific Lavonne Byers). It's performed at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday (April 3 through 19) at Tower Grove Abbey (2336 Tennessee Avenue; 314-865-1995 or www.straydogtheatre.org). Tickets are $18 to $35.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: April 3. Continues through April 19, 2014
