Something in the Water

The Creature from the Black Lagoon may be the most unappreciated of the Universal Monsters. He has no real name, he's confined to mostly aquatic settings and his skill set consists mainly of swimming really well. Still, the big lug has his charms. Director Jack Arnold shot the film's underwater scenes with balletic grace, allowing the Creature a certain panache that Frankenstein never had. You can see the original (and best) of the Black Lagoon series tonight when Culture Shock Film Series screens Creature from the Black Lagoon at 7 p.m. at Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood; www.afilmseries.com). Culture Shock is the outreach arm of Helping Kids Together, a program focused on providing learning-based social opportunities for young people. The film series is a way for the group to raise awareness of its mission. Admission to the film is a suggested $6 donation.
