Eric Rockwell and Joanne Bogart poke a little fun at that American institution, the musical, with their cleverly titled satire, The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!)
. The simplistic plots ("How will I pay the rent?"), the tricks and habits of the more successful composers and writers (Kander and Ebb, Sondheim, Rodgers & Hammerstein), and the stock characters and their stock relationships are all savaged. But it's a knowing and fond mockery, with such a great deal of love for the artistry of the genre that you laugh along even as your personal favorites are being ripped a new one. Insight Theatre Company presents The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!)
at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday (August 21 through 24) at Heagny Theatre on the Nerinx Hall campus (530 East Lockwood Avenue, Webster Groves; 314-968-1503, extension 131). Tickets are $8 to $15.
