Strange Brew & Strange Brew

Just like Hamlet, eh?

If one were looking for an instructional guide for young men just starting out in the world, you could begin and end your search with Strange Brew. In this highly informative film, Canadian gentlemen Bob and Doug McKenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, respectively, who also wrote and directed) demonstrate how to make a successful science-fiction film, how to land a job at a brewery, how to woo a woman while suffering from puke breath, how to survive driving a van into a lake and how to handle yourself in both a courtroom and a prison, among many other lessons. The fact that the plot is lifted completely from Shakespeare's Hamlet cements the film's brilliance; steal from the best and forget the rest is a valuable life lesson, indeed. The Webster Film Series comes full circle by presenting Strange Brew as part of its Strange Brew program at 8 p.m. this evening at Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood; 314-241-2337 or www.schlafly.com). Admission is $4, and you can leave the mouse at home. The doorman already knows that trick — he's seen the film as well.
