Supernatural Storybook

For years now, the Green Center (8025 Blackberry Avenue, University City; www.thegreencenter.org) has exhibited artwork inspired by the natural world around us, but the gallery takes a turn for the surreal as St. Louis' own Mark Sheppard hits the walls. The work featured in the new solo exhibit, Mark's Nature: Drawings and Paintings, evokes an old-world vibe, but upon closer examination, the bizarre, fantastic elements take shape to reveal an id unhinged. Crafted in ink and gouache, Mark's Nature is the stuff of nightmares, like pages torn from a supernatural storybook. The show opens with a free public reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 11. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Wednesday, and Mark's Nature remains on display through Thursday, March 31.
Fri., Feb. 11; Wednesdays. Starts: Feb. 11. Continues through March 31, 2011
