The Art of Folk

Outsider art is so widely dispersed through our larger culture that it can seem pretty comfortably inside nowadays -- anybody without art training can claim to be a practitioner. Yet there are still genuine outsiders around who create original, unorthodox art from a purer impulse that's completely irony free. You can view some of this form of outsider art at The Art of Folk, a new exhibit in the gallery of the University City Public Library (6701 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-727-3150 or www.ucpl.lib.mo.us). The Art of Folk collects works executed by the artists of the Turner Center for the Arts, a Maplewood nonprofit that makes studio space and art supplies available to area adults and children with disabilities. The exhibit is on display daily (February 4 through 27), but the library will be closed on Monday, February 17, for Presidents' Day.
