St. Louis and soccer go way back. A strong immigrant community and our abundant public parks allowed the game to flourish after WWII, so much so that five of the starting eleven players on the 1950 U.S. Men's National Team hailed from St. Louis. That was the team that famously defeated England 1-0 in the '50 World Cup. St. Louis soccer legend Harry Keough played right fullback on that team, and that moment of victory was not his last taste. When soccer became an NCAA sport, Keough coached the Saint Louis University men's team to ten NCAA championships in fifteen years. These golden years of soccer are the subject of the documentary A Time for Champions. The film, which originally aired on KETC (Channel 9), has interviews with Keough, Bob Costas and Yogi Berra, who was so bad at the game he switched to baseball.
