Despite their airy, celestial name, the Plastic Constellations sound more like a massive supernova explosion. The Minneapolis quartet's new album, Crusades, matches topsy-turvy post-hardcore riffs with lurching rhythms conducive to slow-motion head-scrambling, an atmosphere that aligns well with the pulverizing sort of limb-loosening encouraged by TPC's Frenchkiss Records labelmates Les Savy Fav. Nevertheless, the more dirge-like elements on the disc bring to mind a louder, shout-prone Low — the band with which TPC played its very first show.
