CRITICS' PICKS

Despite the summer sun hanging high in the sky, if you find yourself longing for the cold darkness of winter, check out the Prids. The band was founded in the Midwest by a former couple (guitarist David Frederickson and bassist Mistina Kelly), although these days the band is rounded out by drums and keyboards and calls Portland, Oregon, home. This Pacific Northwest locale suits a band that plays dark, new-wave-influenced pop painting a beautiful (yet gloomy) haze on even the brightest of afternoons. Tracks like the danceable, New Order-influenced "Like Hearts" pack the band's sophomore release, Until The World is Beautiful. It's rare to hear dance-pop gems that are this original — and influenced by the past while not being derivative.
