The Storm Before the Calm

There are two days between Soulard's Mardi Gras revelry and the actual Fat Tuesday that gives the party season its name. That's by design -- if you do Saturday properly, you should just about be recovered and ready to go again by today. So belt on your party pants one more time, because this is it. The Fat Tuesday Parade drops the flag at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Broadway, then heads west to Fourteenth Street (www.stlmardisgras.org). There are more lights, more floats, more beads and more fun, but only 'till midnight -- then this magical season of excess is done. Admission is free, but many of downtown's drinking establishments are open for business, so bring your wallet if you're planning to celebrate just a little bit more.
