These Are Powers

8 p.m. Tuesday, September 9. Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center, 3301 Lemp Avenue

It makes sense that members of These Are Powers split their time between Brooklyn and Chicago; the band's relentless noise rock is equal parts skronky NYC No Wave and Windy City minimalist pounding à la Shellac. Distorted guitars float in the air like spaceships (Anna Barie's hypnotic vocals anchor them), while Bill Salas' drumming pushes the songs forward in a linear fashion until the band breaks them into a million pieces. All geography aside, These Are Powers owes as much to modern noise pioneers Lightning Bolt as it does Ravi Shankar — the band's one-chord-and-a-beat aesthetic is reminiscent of Shankar's ragas, or at least comes off like an amped-up version of the Fab Four's "Tomorrow Never Knows."
