Gritty songwriter Tom Waits comes to the Fox Theatre on June 26, but the bigger buzz leading up to his "Glitter and Doom" tour concerns Anywhere I Lay My Head, Scarlett Johansson's album of the avant-bard's covers. It takes a minute to get over the idea of the perpetually poised Johansson crooning the title cut.
(We eventually buy the ringtone.)
Then we realize: Hey, in the world of career-boosting productions, this is a breakthrough! Who else could benefit from the new formula?
Unreal has compiled a short list:
Kirsten Dunst (Bring It On) + Tim Armstrong (Operation Ivy, Rancid)
Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) + Richard Thompson (British guitar virtuoso)
Jennifer Aniston (The Break-Up) + Elliott Smith (He killed himself, but it doesn't count until fans accept the fact.)
George Clooney (Ocean's Whatever) + Rosemary Clooney (duh)
Daryl Hannah (The Clan of the Cave Bear) + Jackson Browne (double duh!)
Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City) + Gordon Lightfoot ("The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald")
Nelly (The Longest Yard) + Nelly Furtado ("I'm Like a Bird")
Town Talk: Unreal Responds!
This week Unreal talks back to the following item, published in May and titled "Re-train the ladies":
This is in response to the ho's [sic] in the Broadway Park. I really don't believe enough is being done about it. People are still complaining about it, calling your paper. My husband when he works the night shift, he was propositioned twice by what he calls the ladies of the evening, which are ho's of course. I really think something should be done to clean that up there on Broadway. When it comes to ho's like that they could be spreading disease around to other people when they sleep with them. I don't know if anybody checks to see if they've gone to a doctor. That's what that person should think about before they put a note in the paper. What is the city doing about training these girls to get a decent job?....
Unreal responds! Sounds, indeed, like pure ho-kum! Please provide specific addresses and photos, if available. We will do some homework on these ho-ho-ho-ho horny ho-bos and determine what additional training, if any, is necessary.
Sometimes Unreal can't resist talking back to the South Side Journal's reader-generated "Town Talk" feature.

Recent Highlight (May 23): Missing All the Little Kittehs
You may have wondered why you haven't read anything about saving kittehs here at my bl0ggedy blog.
It is fairly simple, really. Since getting pregnant I haven't been able to trap. Oh sure, I show up for moral support sometimes and I still feed all the harbor cats every Wednesday night, but it isn't the same.
I miss trapping and making a difference in the cat population...but what's a girl to do?
I can no longer lift the heavy trap cages up over the fence, which is shoulder height, and I can no longer jump the fence to place the traps among the rocks where the cats live. So no trapping. Period.
I really do feel a bit like something is missing.
Here's a tiny little update on the cats, though. Kasey, the cat that it took more than a year to trap, had recently disappeared for a long while. I had pretty much figured that she was dead, it had been so long — and then just about a week or so ago, she turned up when I was out feeding. She came right up to me and began rubbing against my leg. I was very pleased to see her and glad she is alive and well.
There is still trapping being done, but the number of cats trapped since I stopped doing it has dwindled down to nearly nonexistent numbers. Not that anyone is incapable, but I had a knack for it and got at least one nearly every time I went out (after much practice!!). At least there is someone still trying!
