The phrase viva voce is loosely translated from Latin as "word of mouth." It's an apt name for a band whose popularity, musicianship and songwriting has steadily grown as it's moved to different parts of the country (Muscle Shoals, Nashville, Portland) and released LPs via several independent record labels (Asthmatic Kitty, Minty Fresh, Barsuk). Recent tours with the Shins and Jimmy Eat World helped Viva Voce become a force to be reckoned with, and no doubt influenced the recently released Rose City. On the LP the duo of Kevin and Anita Robinson enlists the services of bassist/guitarist Corrina Repp and drummer Evan Railton. The result is a sprawling, diverse record with plenty of reverb-laden psychedelic sheen, deep-pocketed R&B grooves and a rumbling rhythm section.
