We can think of no better way to escape the mounting holiday frazzle than an evening at Powell Symphony Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard; 314-533-2500 or www.slso.org
). Especially this weekend. Friday and Saturday (November 26 and 27) at 8 p.m. and Sunday (November 28) at 3 p.m., Leonard Slatkin
returns to conduct the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra as it performs Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony
. You might say Maestro Slatkin and the SLSO have a way with the Fifth
: Their 1984 recording of it earned the conductor and the orchestra a Grammy for "Best Classical Recording." Slatkin led the SLSO for seventeen years before heading east to Washington, D.C.; in 2011, he'll be going even farther east when he assumes his new post as musical director of the ONL, the Orchestre national de Lyon, in France. Welcome back an old friend of St. Louis' this weekend. Tickets are $21 to $112.
