"We take group showers to conserve water."

"Well, I drive a car and I'm a consumer, so that's two marks against me. I tried composting, but dad gets mad at fruit flies in the house. Guess the only thing I've done lately is to stop all my friends from littering — I mean, I yell at them. They probably wait till I get out of sight and then pitch the McDonald's bags out the window."

"Not much here, but over on the East Side I worked for the city. I got up every morning and I drove around with a crew in a big old truck. We cleaned up, made the environment safer, did whatever needed to be done, and I felt good about that, yes I did."

Christine Ilewski
Fine Artist

"This spring I planted 300 bulbs, all kinds — gladiolas, dahlias, freesias — and after I planted those bulbs I continued to buy I don't know how many flowers, perennials that'll come up again and again, so even if we move the flowers would keep on going."

Joe Galli
Proprietor, Little Shop of Monsters

"Instead of boards I put Plexiglas on the windows of my building. You got a prominent location, you're not prepared to renovate at the time, what're you gonna do? You use ingenuity. The preservation people gave me shit: "Plexiglas? You can't do that — it's not historic!' But it's better than plywood that says, in scribbled spray paint, "Bob's Board-Up.'"

Christina Danna
Jewelry Polisher, Nieja Bend

"Not throwing my cigarette butts out the car window, especially not during dry season. It's not so much to improve the environment; I just want to stay on the good side of Smokey the Bear."
