When Magic's Magic Fades

In The Magicians, Lev Grossman introduced us to Quentin Coldwater, a high-school senior who's unhappy with the real world and would prefer to spend his days in Fillory, the magical realm that exists only in his favorite book series. Then Quentin is recruited to a magical college -- like, real wizard-type stuff -- makes new friends, falls in love and discovers that Fillory is a real place, and the characters from his beloved books are still there. Grossman's new novel, The Magician King, picks up the story five years later. Quentin and Co. rule Fillory, but being a king is tedious business. So Quentin and Julia chuck it all and go in search of adventure in Fillory's wilder regions -- and that may not be the best plan. Lev Grossman discusses and signs copies of The Magician King as the guest of Left Bank Books at 7 p.m. at the Schlafly branch of the St. Louis Public Library (225 North Euclid Avenue; 314-367-6731 or www.left-bank.com). Admission is free.
