It's Oscar season again, and this year, nine movie were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture out of a possible ten. Below you can find our review of each of them -- and where you can still see them in St. Louis.

American Hustle
We called it a "con to fall for" in our review, and you can still see it at these theaters.

Gravity
Some movies are so tense and deeply affecting that they shave years off your life as you're watching, only to give back that lost time, and more, at the end. Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity is one of those movies.

Her
In Spike Jonze's futuristic romance Her, Joaquin Phoenix plays Theodore, an about-to-be-divorced Los Angeles writer who falls in love with an operating system, one designed not only to run his laptop and devices but to help him get through life; it intuits and meets his every need.

Nebraska
In Alexander Payne's endearingly gruff Nebraska, ex-auto mechanic Woody Grant (Bruce Dern, with a wild, white puff of hair) is the sucker senior citizen. But our sympathies are with his exasperated sons, David and Ross (Will Forte and Bob Odenkirk), who must gingerly convince their father that he's a fool.

Philomena
Based on actual events, Stephen Frears's Philomena sees Judi Dench anchor a stellar stolen-children drama.

12 Years a Slave
Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave: The story it tells, a true one, is horrifying: In 1841, Solomon Northup, a free, educated black man from Saratoga, New York, was kidnaped, sold into slavery and transported to Louisiana. His captivity lasted twelve years.

The Wolf of Wall Street
Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street is the kind of movie directors make when they wield money, power, and a not inconsiderable degree of arrogance. Sprawling and extravagant, it revels in all manner of excess, including sexual debauchery, hearty abuse of liquor and quaaludes, even dwarf-tossing.
