Zs / McClain-Trull Duo

8 p.m. Tuesday, February 20. Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center (3301 Lemp Avenue).

Brooklyn's Zs is the rare experimental band that takes delight in its music — not just to show off instrumental dexterity, but to share the joy of the surprises that songcraft can offer. The group's recent recordings sound like a game of follow-the-leader, with harmonizing singers and horns staying on beat as the tempo speeds up and slows down before crashing headlong into cymbal clangs and bass thumps. (Other tracks sound like outtakes from Tom Waits' Swordfishtrombones, all clutter, bang and crash.) The McClain-Trull Duo — which is two-thirds of the city's favorite borderless instrumental trio, Grand Ulena — opens the show.
