A Banner Night

Baseball season has only just begun and St. Louis is hoisting another championship banner. All right, it’s for basketball, but still – the champs are the champs. It’s been 50 years since the St. Louis Hawks defeated the Boston Celtics for the NBA title, and at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org), the Hawks finally get their St. Louis World Championship flag. Members of that high-flyin’ Hawks team will be present, as will NBA legend Oscar Robertson. Broadcasters Rene Knott, Frank Cusamano and Greg Maracek will attend to help retire four Hawks’ numbers, and the NBA has prepared several special videos honoring the Hawks’ legacy. Tickets are $25 to $100; if you buy a ticket costing $50 or more, you get The St. Louis Hawks: A Gallery of Images and Memorabilia book and CD set as a gift.
