A Peach of A Day

Ahhh, peaches! Is there a more perfect fruit for pie-making? A peach pie ascends above all other fruity desserts, with its smidge of tartness that balances out the sweet. Lesser pies, like apple, lack that pucker factor, while rhubarb pies have it in spades — too much so, in fact. Yes, peaches are flawless, which is why the Kirkwood Farmers' Market (150 East Argonne Drive) celebrates them with its Peach Festival & Peach Pie Contest. The party begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, and everyone will get to eat peaches by themselves and peaches in various dishes as well as look on as judges sample peach pies — made with peaches purchased at the Kirkwood market, natch — and declare the top three. If you would like to be a contender in the contest, visit www.downtownkirkwood.com to print out an entry form, which you can then submit at 130 East Jefferson Avenue by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 10.
