The Shakespeare Festival St. Louis may be the finest summer institution. It's a huge affair but very laid-back; the Green Show before the play is stacked with everything from fire eaters to belly dancing; the food and drink is great (and handy if you don't bring your own picnic); and the main event is a play by the greatest English playwright in history. (Were you going to argue that? Just don't.) This season's play is The Taming of the Shrew — set in a '50s-style suburb with girls in poodle skirts and guys in Buddy Holly suits reciting all that gorgeous iambic pentameter about never being tamed by love. The Taming of the Shrew is performed at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, through Sunday, June 19, (every night except Tuesday) at Shakespeare Glen in Forest Park (just off Art Hill; www.shakespearefestivalstlouis.org). The Green Show begins at 6:30 p.m., so get there early. Admission is free.
