Imagine a dinner party where the guests are wealthy people of no small renown. The hosts are the deputy mayor of New York and his wife — but she's missing, and he's bleeding from a gunshot wound to the earlobe. Now, is there any possible way that this party doesn't end up on the front page of every newspaper in the Western hemisphere? If the guests have anything to say about it, nobody will ever hear a word about what happened at this ill-fated party. In Neil Simon's farcical play Rumors, the high-and-mighty go to great lengths to maintain their reputations — even going so far as to abandon what dignity they have in order to preserve the semblance of dignity.
