What the? Out of nowhere, Artica returns from beyond the ether to dazzle the city with its utopian ideals of art and equality — it's like a funked-up Brigadoon. Artica 2010: Return of the Mound Builders, the art festival for the people and by the people, brings dreamers and visionaries down to the St. Louis riverfront (Lewis and Dickson streets) this Saturday and Sunday (October 9 and 10) for an open-air celebration featuring interactive installation art, performance art, civic art and general merriment. The Boat of Dreams Parade (2 p.m. Sunday) encourages everyone to make a biodegradable vessel to float their dreams and wishes downriver, and Extreme Croquet (3 p.m. Sunday) requires you to make your own mallet and ball (it must fit through a standard wicket) in order to play on a massive urban playing field with vague rules and no sense of propriety — winner gets a hunk of junk. Artica 2010 runs from 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday; admission is free, and you're welcome to bring food and drink (in the spirit of Artica, please consider sharing your bounty) as long as you clean up after yourself.
