Autobiographiquilt

Artist Rachel Heim creates her work with the help of live models, which is not uncommon. Heim's making quilts, however, which makes her use of models somewhat unexpected. She often begins with a gestural drawing of the model, which she then modifies by adding fabric until she has the rough shape of the figure. Heim then works the various layers of the piece using traditional methods, creating a quilt that nods to the past in a very modern fashion. Odyssey, an exhibition of Heim's quilts, opens with a free reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, at Gallery Visio on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-7022 or umsl.edu/~galvisio). The subject of the show is Heim's own life, a pictorial narrative of key moments that have shaped her much the same way she's shaped them in fabric and paper. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday, and Odyssey remains on display through Wednesday, February 27. Admission is free.
