Blithering Idiot! Old Foghorn! Wait: What's that? Is Great-Uncle Maurice drunkenly shouting epithets at Sunday dinner again? No, no — those are just names of two excellent barley wines. (Although, if Maurice wants to get tanked at the family supper, barley wine might be the way to go; we're talking 8.5 to 12 percent ABV here.) Dubbed "wines" because of their high alcohol content, barley wines are actually ales. And, like their grape counterparts, good barley wines can become even better over time.
