Here's the thing: No matter how many layers you wear, how much hot cocoa you drink and how often you dream of the beach, you're still going to be cold in St. Louis in the wintertime. Them's the breaks. And you can't spend all season hunkered down under a Slanket! You might as well embrace the chill and have a little fun with it while you're at it. That's the whole idea behind the Loop Ice Carnival, happening throughout the day up and down Delmar (from 6100 to 6600 Delmar Boulevard; 314-727-8000 or At this indoor/outdoor extravaganza, folks can check out ice-carving demonstrations at Fitz's American Grill & Bottling Works, kids can glide down an ice slide outside of Blueberry Hill, and mini-golfers can take part in the Putt-Putt Pub Crawl (from noon to 5 p.m.; free entry), beginning at Cicero's or the Pageant. Plus, $1,000 worth of dollar coins will be frozen in ice cubes and distributed throughout the shops in the Loop — to increase your winning chances, you'll just have to visit them all! And the freezing festival even offers warm-up opportunities by way of a run (the Frozen Buns Run begins at 10 a.m.;, fire performers and toasty s'mores! Mmmm, toasty s'mores — these might just be the best part of winter!
