Beauty Without Borders

Painter, sculptor, cartoonist, puppeteer, set designer, animator and illustrator are just a few of the careers Wayne White balances. He's best known for helping create the boundlessly creative, bizarre world of Pee-wee's Playhouse, but he got his start as a cartoonist. Recently, his "word paintings" (vintage landscape paintings with aphorisms and advice laid over them in white text) are being praised by the fine art world. White's process brings humor to art through honesty and regurgitation, always seeing potential for reinvention and re-appropriation. As he describes it, "I want to take this painting idea and see if you can do a puppet version of it." View the world through White's truly groundbreaking vision in Neil Berkeley's documentary Beauty is Embarrassing. The film screens at 7:30 p.m.
