Things have been quiet around here lately — too quiet. What we need is about three days of chopped and raked cars blasting through quarter-mile drags at eardrum-busting volume. And looky here: The United Black Drag Racers Association comes to Gateway International Raceway (700 Raceway Boulevard, Madison, Illinois; 866-357-7333 or www.gatewayraceway.com) Friday through Sunday (September 15 to 17) to do just that. In addition to the quarter-mile races, the UBDRA also sponsors "Quick 16" races (that's an even-faster one-eighth-mile drag) for cars and motorcycles. Sunday is officially Black Sunday, when champions are born after fighting their way through the elimination brackets. Races start at 1 p.m. today (visit www.ubdra.net for the full weekend schedule), admission is $5 to $25, and two- and three-day passes are also available.
