Bike Bare

When World Naked Bike Ride St. Louis debuted in 2008, many people wondered what the turnout would be. How many easy-going Midwesterners would show up to protest the oil and auto industries and promote positive body imagery while naked and riding a bike? This ain't Portland, after all. It turns out a lot of easy-going Midwesterners would, precisely because we're so casual about it. We come in all shapes and sizes, and we're increasingly fine with that. The city is becoming more bike friendly every day, and we don't really need a reason to strip off and party in the summertime. Each year the World Naked Bike Ride gets bigger and bolder -- someday we're gonna see a mayor leading the peloton, you watch -- and the 2014 installment promises to be another great naked night out. This year's best political-activism party starts at 5 p.m. in the Grove neighborhood at the intersection of Manchester Avenue and Sarah Street. There will be the standard body painting and musical entertainment, and Manchester will be bikes and pedestrians only -- that's progress right there. The ride starts at 7 p.m. and loops through the city and back to the Grove by 9 p.m. for the after-party. Remember, you don't have to take off anything you don't want to, and ride safely. Admission is free, and more information is available at
Sat., July 26, 5 p.m., 2014
