Biking in the Dark

The metro area's numerous parks are a boon to recreational cyclists -- there's so many of them that you can ride a different park every week and still have parks left over at the end of the summer. The St. Charles County Parks system ups the ante for mountain bikers by opening select parks after hours for moonlight mountain bike rides from March through December. This month's ride is scheduled for 8 to 10:30 p.m. at the Louis H. Bangert Memorial Wildlife Area (1704 South River Road, St. Charles), a wooded, 160-acre island in the Missouri River just south of the Blanchette Bridge. You provide your own bike, light and helmet, and members of Gateway Off-Road Cyclists and the St. Louis Area Mountain Bikers lead you over and around the park's natural surface trails. There's no cost for the moonlight mountain bike rides, but it's a good idea to call the park hotline (636-949-7475) for the latest on cancellations and closures before you go.
