Black and Pride

Gays in black culture might be welcomed on the pop culture main stage, but in real life are often misunderstood and shunned by the people and institutions they love. Yoruba Richen's documentary The New Black dives into that acceptance gap during Maryland's battle over the legality of same-sex marriage. It shines an especially bright light on the black church, an institution known for its role in fighting for civil rights, but that now can't seem to accept gay rights are just as important to some members of its congregations. The Webster University Film Series presents a free screening of The New Black at 7 p.m. tonight at Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries)as part of the school's Year of International Human Rights programming. Admission is free.
