Books, Bullets & Booze

After some time off, Noir at the Bar returns with an appropriate and sudden bang. The hard-edged reading series welcomes Pinckney and Laura Benedict to the Delmar Lounge (6235 Delmar Boulevard; 314-862-6100 or www.subbooks.com) for an evening of book talkin' and drinkin'. Mr. Benedict is your average Appalachian-America writer, a fan of guns, Metallica and cult '70s comic book Weird War, and he has a new short fiction collection entitled Wonder Boy and Other Stories just recently on the market; Mrs. Benedict is the author of two dark thrillers, Isabella Moon and Calling Mr. Lonely Hearts, and together the Benedicts edit the Surreal South anthology series. That's a lot of chills for one couple, but they can handle it. Sean Doolittle, author of Burn, is also scheduled to read, and Noir at the Bar masterminds Jed Ayers and Scott Phillips will grace us with their words as well. Copies of everyone's stuff will be available for purchase through Subterranean Books. The fun begins at 8 p.m., and while admission is free, drinks aren't. Bring money or go thirsty.
