The brass section of the orchestra is the muscle; when the composer wants volume, brass provides it. But there's also potential for delicacy there: Think of the mournful tenor of a lone French horn or the muted sibilance of a trumpet. Susan Slaughter, principal trumpet of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, leads the Holiday Brass Ensemble and the Chancel Choir through holiday favorites at 2:15 and 8 p.m. today at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis (4431 Lindell Boulevard; 314-533-7662). From the stentorian fanfares of "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" to the restrained grace of "Silent Night," the full scope of the brass section shall indeed be utilized in pursuit of holiday joy. Tickets are $16 to $19.
