Bungle in the Jungle

Jul 7, 2010 at 4:00 am
Mary, Fanny and Alex are robust and resilient female explorers on the path to Terra Incognita. Making their way through jungles and mountains, they encounter strange artifacts of an alien culture: the rear-view mirror from a car, and a troll who's more beat poet than fairy-tale rhymer, which is odd, because when the began their journey the year was 1888. It dawns on them (and the audience) that they're traveling through time toward the future, and what the future holds fascinates and repels them by turns. On the Verge, or the Geography of Yearning is an early play by Eric Overmyer (scripter of The Wire and Treme), and it displays his usual fascination with language and just what it is we're talking about when we talk about anything. Insight Theatre Company opens its third season with On the Verge at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday (July 7 through 18) at Nerinx Hall's Heagney Theatre (530 East Lockwood Avenue, Webster Groves; 314-239-9040 or www.insighttheatrecompany.org). Tickets are $20 to $30.
Wednesdays-Sundays. Starts: July 7. Continues through July 18, 2010
