In Jonathan Tolins' Buyer & Cellar an out-of-work actor named Alex More (the sly pun concealed in that surname becomes apparent when the play's themes of overconsumption and loneliness surface) is employed by Barbra Streisand to maintain the underground shopping mall situated beneath her Malibu estate, its purpose being to house the sheer tonnage of stuff she's bought, collected and saved over decades. He's the sole worker in this surreal subterranean retail netherworld, and Barbra is the only customer. The archly comic one-man show explores the real cost of fame, and the price one pays to believe in the myth of a star being born. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis presents the play as part of its Studio Series.
