Can You Feel the Love?

Tough guys mock love songs publicly — but secretly, we all give in to their sappy power. Larry Krone goes further than most tough guys, though, as he incorporates the lyrics and clichés of popular love songs into his collages via handwritten text. Something as trite as "I Will Always Love You" becomes totemic when the phrase is inscribed, repeatedly, in a radial pattern over the top of his abstract drawings. Krone's reclamation of love is on display in Love Is in the Air at the Philip Slein Gallery (1319 Washington Avenue; or 314-621-4634). The show opens Friday, September 8, with a free public reception; make a repeat visit (you know, for crying and stuff) today, when the gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show remains up through Saturday, October 7.
