Kickstarter.com provides a platform on which creative thinkers introduce their ideas to the world with palms outstretched. They quite literally request a penny for their thoughts, promising to reward the backers with samples of the final product (e.g. a cupcake from the bakery they helped fund or a copy of the record they paid to produce). But long before this site existed, St. Louis had Sloup, a monthly soup dinner benefit to fund local artistic endeavors. Each attendee pays $10 for a bowl of soup to snack on while artists present proposals for projects. The soup eaters then vote on their proposal of choice, and the winning artist claims the pot (the collected $10 cover charges). In short, Sloup is to vinyl as Kickstarter is to mp3s. Be a part of local art at this month's Sloup, taking place today at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (3750 Washington Bouelvard) from noon to 2 p.m. You won't have to wait eight months for your Kickstarter thank-you gift to show up, either --at Sloup, they ladle it out on the spot.
